The Length of Now is a collection of Dave’s writings since his first book, Grand View. The stories and poems are varied in subject and length, touching on heartbreak, time travel, car wrecks, green beans, rogue bullets, and other paraphernalia in the junk drawer of his mind. No underlying theme or purpose laces things together. Rather, this book is an exercise in blowing the cobwebs off disparate works and giving them some light of day and room to breathe. This is Dave's first novel. He took time off from photography in 2018 and wrote the novel in partnership with editor and friend Russel Blixt. Dave's wife Theresa provided reality checks along the way, making the story human.
It is the summer of 1970, but any teen summer really. At seventeen, Dave leaves home to wash dishes for room and board at a resort in the Northwoods of Minnesota. Resort life engages him with a cast of quirky, endearing characters. A human cannonball, a talking dog, a summer love, and joint thievery all make for a time rich with adventure, humor, warmth, and friendship. This is a fun lighthearted read.
